In August 2021 LG were joined by Anna Kellie on a work experience placement working with our landscape department.  This is what Anna had to say about her experience.

Over the summer I have spent eight days doing work experience in landscape architecture at Lockhart Garratt.  My time there has taught me about the breadth of the career, in terms of both the scale and variety of projects that landscape architects work on.  I have also been given a real insight into how the career is and will become increasingly important in strengthening our resilience to climate change, whether through the maintenance and growth of biodiversity through habitat creation, the use of tree planting to cool urban areas, or the use of green infrastructure to solve environmental problems such as flooding.

It was really interesting going out to the sites where the projects were based and meeting the clients and architects, as it allowed me to see the importance of good communication within the project team.  Another one of the things I found interesting about the career was the interconnectedness of landscape architecture to the other professions that would work on these projects and how wide ranging the landscape architects’ knowledge had to be to work effectively on their designs.  I was intrigued to see how planning decisions, especially those relating to ecology, fed into the process of designing an area, such as the conservation of veteran trees or the maintenance of biodiversity, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing how creative problem solving could transform an area, whilst still maintaining its ecological value.

I would like to thank Lockhart Garratt for inviting me to undertake my work experience with them and to the landscape team in particular for taking the time out of their busy days to provide me with such a great insight in to the landscape architectural world.

Our Landscape Architect, Richard Heath comments:

Helping young people experience and understand the industry is an essential part of our role as a chartered landscape practice.  Anna is a great candidate with a bright future, and we hope that she chooses landscape architecture as her future career.

We are always keen to hear from young people whom are trying to break into the environmental sector – work experience is a great way to gain insight into the industry, make your CV stand out, and see what a rewarding career it can be.
