Woodland Managers and the UK’s Rarest Woodland Animals

Most of us love wildlife. We enjoy birds in our gardens, insects crawling across dead wood, and squirrels searching for nuts. The question is, how long will we enjoy watching them in their day-to-day fascinating adventures?

A sad fact is that most of our wildlife is in the decline. If we fail to act soon enough, these animals will be extinct. It’s the role of a woodland manager to keep a record of these animals and ensure they’re well-protected. Read on to find out some of the rarest animal species in the UK.

The Red Squirrel

The red squirrel has a signature bushy tail, brown fur, and big ear tufts. They enjoy a diet of seeds and nuts, tree buds, flowers, shoots, lichen, and bark. They were once in a large population but have decreased recently. They were outnumbered by grey squirrels which were imported from North America in the 20th century. The grey squirrels adapted quickly to a new habitat and foraged more.

Water Vole

The water vole is similar to the brown rat and is an endangered species as well. Also known as the water dog or water rat, it’s found along streams and rivers and consumes up to 80% of its body weight. They’re active during the day and rest at night. They have three to four litters annually and dig burrows along the river banks where they sleep at night.

The water vole was found in almost every waterway in England, Wales, and Scotland, and currently, 90% of these species are lost in these areas. This is because they’ve fallen prey to the non-native North American mink as well as habitat loss and water pollution.

The Pine Marten

These mustelids have a white-yellow throat, chestnut-brown coat, and a long hairy tail. They’re almost similar in size to a cat and weigh one to two kilograms. Their habitat is the coniferous and deciduous woodland and their main diet is birds, carrion, fruit, eggs, small mammals, and insects.

Pine marten have declined due to being prey for eagles and foxes. One of the main reasons is hunting and the destruction of habitat in the 1800s. Small numbers remain in Wales, Scotland, and Northern England.

At Lockhart Garratt, we have competent woodland managers with efficient woodland management skills. Their goal is to protect these endangered species through effective habitat and protected species surveys. One of the case studies conducted includes the Bradgate Park-bat conservation in ancient parkland trees.
