Carbon revenue is now emerging as an important revenue stream for new woodlands in England.
The first auction under the Woodland Carbon Guarantee Scheme, offering landowners the option to sell their verified Woodland Carbon Units to the Government, was held in January/February 2020 with 18 contracts being offered to help stimulate the creation of 182ha of woodland in England. Overall there were 32 bids in the auction.
Lockhart Garratt continue to lead in this sector working closely with the Government and statutory undertakers to help shape thinking and policy in this area. As a business we have extensive practical experience in the woodland carbon field having registered numerous projects with the Woodland Carbon Code since its inception in 2011.
The second auction will run from 8-19 June 2020 and our experts are here to assist landowners with the registration, budget preparation and application process.
A budget of £10 million is available.
If you wish to apply applicants must register with the Woodland Carbon Code (WCC) before Friday 29th May. The deadline to then register for the 2nd auction is Friday 5th June 2020.

The Woodland Carbon Guarantee (WCaG) is open to land managers, owner occupiers, tenants, landlords and licensors, as long as they have control of the land, and all activities meet the obligations of the Woodland Carbon Code. Applications can be made alongside existing grant agreements (for example, Countryside Stewardship, the Woodland Carbon Fund or the HS2 Woodland Fund) provided that the agreement was signed after 29 October 2018.
Details of the simple registration process can be located on our previous website post in November 2020.
