Oxwich Bay, Swansea – Developing a Landscape and Design Strategy

Designing greenspace into a holiday resort on the sensitive Gower coastline

Overview

Lockhart Garratt were commissioned by Greenways of Gower to provide a Landscape and Design Strategy, and Management Plan for two compartments in a new holiday area consisting of 27 seasonal touring caravans and 25 holiday lodges situated in Oxwich Bay, Swansea.

This project included the development of a Landscape Design Strategy for the holiday park and considered the comments of the local planning officer for the project, providing a pragmatic approach to mitigating the ecological and visual effects of the proposal on this sensitive area of the welsh coastline.

The Landscape Design Strategy included two areas and a comprehensive planting scheme that ensured trees and scrub are present close to each of the holiday units and central block of woodland to provide shelter for animals.

The planting scheme detailed comprehensive information on the species proposed for planting, including height, form, soil type and sunlight requirements along with detailed notes for their ongoing management.

This project also incorporated the existing landscaping around the two respective areas into the Landscape Design Strategy.  Liaison with the local planning officer also took place to ensure the designs were in-keeping with local planning requirements and strategies.

Key Features

  • Sensitive incorporation of existing landscaping within the new design.
  • Development of a comprehensive planting scheme.
  • Effective communication with local planning officer to ensure the designs were in-keeping with local planning requirements and strategies.
