Hanson Aggregates UK – Groby (Aug 2017)

A sensitive SSSI habitat

Overview

A successful negotiation with senior Natural England officers to agree a low-level restoration of a former aggregates yard in Leicestershire to heathland / naturally colonized woodland. Lockhart Garratt avoided costly re‐instatement of yard to woodland plantation.

Compiling cost comparisons of low impact harvesting methods (horse / quad) for adjacent ancient semi‐natural SSSI alder woodland and producing a 20-year management plan for the site. Managing the implementation of coppice, selecting horse extraction for sale of hardwood firewood into local markets.  Adopting small scale, low impact and practical techniques for management of a sensitive SSSI habitat.
