Podium Landscape Design

Overview

Lockhart Garratt were instructed to develop a detailed design for a proposed podium landscape as part of a new residential development in Fortis Green, London. The podium landscape was comprise two parts – a larger community space above the proposed undercroft garage for use by occupants of the proposed apartments; and a series of smaller, private garden spaces associated with the four individual town house dwellings on the southern edge of the site.

Our landscape team, under the guidance of lead Landscape Architect, Richard Fox, developed a series of detailed landscape designs, incorporating raised planters, irrigation and sculptural elements alongside drifts of planting and built-in seating areas. The communal space preserved access for deliveries and movement between the various elements of the scheme, whilst creating smaller, more intimate seating spaces for the use of residents.

The use of architectural blocks of planting and swathes of softer planting using grasses and flowering perennials, provides visual interest and a sense of movement within the space. A single multi-tree provides height and scale, and a bespoke concrete bench sets the tone for a high quality communal space.

Private garden spaces were carefully considered so as to provide a space for outdoor dining and entertaining, whilst considering the specific micro-climate and habitat that would be created by the large retaining walls that would adjoin the rear edges of these spaces. The use of shade loving plant species and large architectural foliage provide a relatively low maintenance but striking garden space for residents.
