Who are you? My name is Alison Barrett and I am a Senior Mapping Specialist and Landscape Consultant. I joined Lockhart Garratt straight from University as a Graduate Assistant and over the years have seen my role evolve from purely GIS, to Landscape Consultancy.
What do you do? My role has previously focused on providing GIS and CAD expertise to all sections of the Business. However, following a decision to encourage GIS and CAD work to be undertaken within each separate Business Unit, my role evolved to working with a variety of clients as a Landscape Consultant within the Landscape and Green Infrastructure Team. The majority of my role is now spent carrying out Landscape and Visual Appraisals, Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments and Digital Terrain Modelling and Zone of Theoretical Visibility (ZTV) analyses. This involves me visiting potential new development sites to assess the landscape and visual receptors and the likely impacts of the proposals. Using Digital Terrain Modelling software, enables me to produce a Zone of Theoretical Visibility to test when out in the field.
What project have you found particularly interesting to be involved with? As part of my role as a Senior Leader, I was tasked with taking the Company through the Investors in People process, initially at the Core Standard level, and this year raising this to Bronze level. My role in this process was to ensure that the Investors in People requirements were understood, implemented and fully integrated into the company culture in all of the business units and that this was effectively communicated to Investors in People assessors . This was a great process to have been involved in and has demonstrated how committed Lockhart Garratt is to its staff and their development.
What has been your favourite Lockhart Garratt moment to date? There have been many great LGL moments over the years, particularly at office Christmas parties! However, I particularly enjoyed one of our charity weekends away, when we set off to the Wye Valley to undertake a ‘moderate’ hike and canoe down the River Wye. John Lockhart was the event organiser, and assured us all that the hike would not be too strenuous – it was a 26 mile hike up and down many steep hills! We forgave him though, and I’ll never forget canoeing 10 miles down the River Wye, bailing out the canoe with my trainers as it poured with rain!
What are your interests and hobbies? I am a qualified dance teacher with the International Dance Teachers Association and teach ballroom, latin, disco freestyle and street dance to children and adults during the evenings. I have also been known to dance on stage myself with a local Musical Theatre Company, appearing in shows such as Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Addams Family, Beauty and the Beast to name but a few. I am also a huge Star Wars fan and a member of a Star Wars Cosplay group that dress up for fun and raise money for charity at the same time.
