The Housing White Paper missed the opportunity to take a more proactive and positive approach to the Green Belt and in many peoples view, including CPRE, condemned it to a gradual decline, rather than the protection desired and promised.

As we have advocated previously, we need a more enlightened and positive approach. The Times article highlights the issues with these most valuable areas that are now threatened by loopholes, around a poorly suited Local Plan process and challenging housing targets, brought about by the national housing shortage.

In our view there needs to be a proactive and engaged approach between local authorities, statutory agencies, NGO’s and environmental groups, working with planners and developers to proactively take control so that any changes to Green Belt boundaries and land uses are carefully coordinated and informed by a positive Green Infrastructure based approach.
