Established in 1998 Lockhart Garratt has developed from an organisation of only two members of staff providing forestry and environmental land use advice, to a multi-disciplinary environmental planning and forestry consultancy that employs over 35 members of staff across two offices.

We invest in our staff's personal and professional development
The Lockhart Garratt brand promotes professional, innovative, solution-focused advice. The only way we can offer this service effectively is to ensure that all of our staff are the best that they can be.
We actively encourage all staff to design a Personal Development Plan, which incorporates internal and external, professional and personal training requirements, in order to develop knowledge, skills and career development. These plans are prepared during an annual appraisal with Line Managers, then reviewed and amended (if required) on a quarterly basis.
We are happy to support all training opportunities in the form of time, financial and internal advice.
Over the past few years we have also developed a Graduate Training Programme which all Graduates joining the company will work through over the first 13 months of employment. The object of the Graduate Training Programme is to provide a Graduate Consultant with a structured training programme that will introduce them to all aspects of the work undertaken by Lockhart Garratt. This training provides the Graduate with the fulfilment of a programme that will widen their skills base and demonstrate a commitment to personal development that will be an element of the skills necessary to attain promotion to Assistant Consultant.
We support and influence education within the industry
We are proud to support education within the industry and currently sponsor the following awards:
- Award for Excellence, postgraduate Forestry Management course, Harper Adams University;
- Award for Excellence, ABC Awards Level 6 Diploma in Arboriculture, in conjunction with the Royal Forestry Society;
- Masters Award, MSc in Arboriculture and Urban Forestry, Myerscough College; and
- The Environmental Science Award for Corby Business Academy.
We are involved with, and represent many key industry professional bodies
Lockhart Garratt has a culture of supporting our professional bodies and actively encourage staff with an interest to become involved and contribute to their respective relevant organisations. We are currently involved at both a local and national level with the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF), Confederation of Forest Industries (ConFor), Landscape Institute, Royal Forestry Society (RFS) plus many more. We take an active role in policy development and implementation.
We are involved in many interesting and exciting projects
As a business we are involved in a wide range of projects both large and small. We currently have management involvement in over 8000ha of lowland forestry and are working closely with Natural England and the Woodland Trust in respect of ancient woodlands.
On the environmental planning side we have key roles in two of the current Garden Village developments as well as high profile projects in both the public and private sector.

Lockhart Garratt is pretty unique in that it is an expanding company, yet still maintains a ‘family’ feel. I enjoy working at Lockhart Garratt because it allows me to develop working relationships with other land managers and clients, and to adapt scientific principles to suit the individual land holding. It’s also rewarding to explain to a client how an “unprofitable” woodland can better meet their objectives without costing lots of money. As the person responsible for individual client accounts, financial targets for each month are clearly communicated and it’s easy to keep track of job profitability, while the Forestry team are happy to give advice if I’m uncertain on how to approach a problem. What do we look for in our employees?
