For several years Kingerlee Homes has been working with Wheatley Park School on a planning project under the auspices of the ‘Oxfordshire Business Education Alliance’.  David Coates, Planning Director at Kingerlee had put together a two day programme [in October] for the project involving Year 9 pupils.  It’s based on Shipton Quarry in Oxfordshire operated by Earthline which at one time had been promoted as an ‘eco town’, only to miss out in favour of North West Bicester.

We were delighted to accept David’s invitation to be involved in this through John Lockhart and Sophie Amphlett.  Day 1 was the site visit to understand the range of activities at the quarry, the scale of operations and the significance of part of it scheduled as an SSSI.  Then back to Kingerlee’s offices in Kidlington where John & Sophie briefed pupils on Landscape, Green Infrastructure and Ecology.  Nick had earlier taken the drone airborne (having cleared his flightpath with Oxford Airport rather close by) and produced a 3D model which was of great interest.

John was also involved in the second day – the group presentations where pupils set out their proposals including housing, leisure and restoration arguing why planning permission should be granted.  This was quite a challenge for a young age group to which they readily responded under some rather rigorous questioning.

John was particularly impressed and commented that “the standard of presentations and understanding of the issues was excellent for students of their age group.  There were some wonderful ideas including really innovative, sustainable transport and affordable housing solutions.  I also loved the ideas of an aquarium based leisure complex.”

David’s contact with us came from our work for Kingerlee at Brightwell cum Sotwell in South Oxfordshire where we had a significant involvement in helping secure a valuable planning consent following a Neighbourhood Plan allocation.  This covered Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment, Arboriculture and Ecology.  We have also prepared detailed landscape proposals, tree protection measures and a management plan for the extensive green spaces.  Infrastructure work has just started in advance of the development of 31 homes.  We look forward to working with David and the Kingerlee team to take forward this interesting project..
