5 Must-Know Forestry News Facts in the UK

Forests are integral to the ecosystems that give us the fundamentals of life. Forests and woods are magical places – they’re glorious and provide us with a suite of advantages. Without them, the planet would be an incredibly different place. Here are five forestry news facts about woods across the UK.

Forestry UK. Nine Benefits of Forestry UK

1. Trees in Woodlands Talk to One Other Via a Fungal Network or ‘Wood Wide Web’

Fungi contain delicate fibres that stretch beneath us, known as mycelium. They can be likened to underground cyberspace that connects to other plants and trees. Trees use these systems to talk – they warn each other about danger and also use them to share nutrients. More mature trees deliver minerals to their young that are growing close by. These relationships are called ‘mycorrhiza’.

2. The UK’s Forests Boast Nearly Half of All the Planet’s Bluebells

The UK is notorious for its jaw-droppingly spectacular carpets of bluebells that flower in its ancient forests during April and May. These slow-spreading bulb flowers can live for ages.

New flowers bloom from the existing bulbs every year. But they encounter numerous perils from habitat loss, trampling, crossbreeding, and competition with Spanish bluebells, not to mention from people digging or picking up the bulbs (this is banned).

3. Roughly 13% of the UK is Covered in Forests and Woodland

The average tree cover in Europe is 44%. But, did you know? The UK has one of the lowest levels of wooded areas in Europe, coming second after Ireland. One of the reasons for this is because not enough trees are being planted in the UK, so we may well enter a period of deforestation very soon.

New woodlands are being created to counteract this issue, and native trees are being planted to connect existing woods. Lockhart Garratt was launched in 1998, and since then, it’s developed into one of the UK’s leading independent forestry consultancies. It’s used its environmental, ecological, and arboriculture expertise to implement a range of forestry management plans, its most recent project being Skeffington Wood.

4. Forests and Woods Are Metropolises for Nature

Our forests and trees boast more species than any other landscape. In the UK, woodlands accommodate some of the lushest habitations, offering homes for hundreds of wildlife like numerous reptiles, birds, mammals, and invertebrates. Forests and their trees give food, shelter, and safe places to breed and hide.

5. Not Every Rainforest is Tropical

As forestry news goes, this is a pretty good one – there are rainforests in the UK! The UK accommodates several tiny pockets of mild, evergreen rainforests with a continually humid setting that fosters growing ferns and mosses.
